Lacrosse Falls at Monmouth, 12-7
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team falls to 3-1 in NEC play with the loss.
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team fell to Monmouth, 12-7, on Thursday afternoon. The Blue Devils (5-5, 3-1 NEC) outpaced the Hawks (4-9, 3-2 NEC) by a 6-4 score in the second half, but the comeback fell short. Senior Cara Momnie scored a pair of goals for the Blue Devil offense.
Junior Betsy Vendel got the Blue Devils on the board with an unassisted goal at the 10:52 mark in the first period. The score allowed the Blue Devils to go into the half trailing, 8-1.
Central scored two quick goals to start the second half. Junior Meaghan McCurry scored off a pass from freshman Jessica Sudock. Momnie followed with a free position goal that cut the deficit to 8-3.
A goal by Monmouth's Kaleigh Gibbons interrupted Central's run before the Blue Devils posted another pair of scores.
Momnie scored her second goal of the game on a free position shot and seniors Ashley Mara and Ashley Perkoski teamed up to put a shot past Monmouth's goalkeeper. The goal was Mara's 12th of the season.
Monmouth increased its lead to 11-5, but Perkoski was able to put in a pair of goals in the final five minutes to give the Blue Devils seven for the game.
Senior goalkeeper Erin DeLancey falls to 5-5 on the season, despite stopping 12 of 24 shots on goal in the game.
Junior Cierra Ward caused two turnovers and picked up a pair of ground balls to help the Central defense.
Perkoski led Central with three points in the game. Vendel contributed six draw controls to go along with her goal. The Blue Devils controlled 10 of 19 draws in the game.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday at Mount St. Mary's. That game will begin at 1 p.m.
