Softball Drops a Doubleheader at Sacred Heart
Central Connecticut dropped a doubleheader on the road at Sacred Heart Friday. Central Connecticut falls to 9-17 on the season and 2-4 in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart improves to 11-14 on the season and 2-2 in the Northeast Conference. The Blue Devils were led by junior Katherine Knowles who had two hits on the afternoon including a double.

Sacred Heart took Game One of the pair by a score of 3-0. The Pioneers were led by Junior pitcher Jen Russell who blanked Central Connecticut pitching a complete game two hitter. striking out seven and only walking one Blue Devil. The Pioneers scored in the bottom of the third inning to break the scoreless tie on a RBI single to center field by junior Taylor Froelich to score sophomore Carley Rudloff who reached on a single to left field.
The Blue Devils offense was led by Knowles who singled down the left field line in the first inning and Kendall Sours who singled to center field in the third inning. The Pioneers were able to hold the Blue Devils hitless after the third inning.
Central Connecticut finished game one with no runs on two hits and two errors while Sacred Heart finished with three runs on five hits and no errors in the victory.
In Game Two the Pioneers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore Liz Tsipouras reached on an error by the shortstop and scored Froelich who reached on a double to left center.
Central Connecticut answered in the top of the fourth inning scoring a run. Knowles led off the fourth frame for the Blue Devils with a double to left center field and was advanced to third on a single down the left field line by junior Erica Koehler. Knowles scored on a RBI sacrifice fly ball to left field by sophomore Sarah Vlahos
With the game tied at one at the end of seven innings of play, game two went to extra innings. The score remained locked at one until the bottom of the eleventh inning when the Pioneers were able to score a run when Frolich singled to the shortstop and would later score on a passed ball.
Central Connecticut sophomore pitcher went the distance for the Blue Devils giving up no earned runs and nine hits over the 10.1 innings pitched. Central Connecticut scored one run on three hits and two errors while Sacred Heart had two runs on nine hits and no errors in the victory.
Central Connecticut Softball will return to action tomorrow April 3, when the Blue Devils will host the Jaspers of Manhattan College for a doubleheader at 11:00 a.m.
