Swimming and Diving Falls at FIU
The Blue Devils fell to Florida International University by a score of 146-90 on Saturday in Miami, FL.
The Central Connecticut women's swimming and diving team fell at Florida International University on Saturday by a score of 146-90. The Blue Devils accumulated 11 top-two finishes on the day with freshman Christine Rasile and junior Karen Novak leading the way for CCSU.
Rasile earned two individual silver medals, one in the 50 yard freestyle with her time of 24.70, and another in the 100 freestyle clocking a time of 53.59. Rasile also helped the 200 yard medley relay squad to second place. The squad, comprised of Rasile, classmate Stephanie Czulewicz and seniors Kristina Gulia and Kellen Power, touched the wall in 1:51.73.
Novak also tallied two second-place individual finishes. She completed the 1000 freestyle in a season-best time of 10:42.62 and also registered a time of 5:17.45 in the 500 freestyle. She also helped the 200 freestyle relay squad to second place, touching the wall in 1:46.53. The squad included Novak, senior Kathryn Kiely, as well as freshmen Kaysha Dassler and Sabree Thomas.
In the 100 butterfly, Power claimed second with her time of 1:00.62. She was followed by freshman Lisa Ward in 1:02.02, good for third, and sophomore Selene Chilton (fourth, 1:03.50). Freshman Janel Crespo touched just after Chilton in 1:03.51.
Chilton also placed third in the 500 yard freestyle with her time of 5:18.20.
In the 100 freestyle, Thomas earned third place, just behind Rasile, with her time of 55.30.
The Blue Devils also performed well in both the 100 yard backstroke and breaststroke, claiming second, third and fourth in each. Gulia finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.62), followed by sophomore Alaina Papiro (1:09.91) and Dassler (1:15.91).
In the 100 backstroke, Czulewicz finished second (1:03.05) and junior Kaylin Sylvester touched third (1:03.64). The pair was followed by Crespo (1:07.10).
From the 1-meter board, sophomore Jessica Goldman, four-time 2013 NEC Diver of the Week, broke her own CCSU record with her score of 258.67, good for second place. Sophomore Kaitlyn Beaver placed third with her score of 210:15. The pair also finished second and third from 3-meters. Beaver claimed second (223.87) while Goldman took third (207.97).
The Blue Devils return to action on January 17 when they head to Austin, TX to compete at the Austin Grand Prix.
