WLax Edged by Robert Morris in 2OTs
The Blue Devils and Colonials needed two extra periods to decide the winner.
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team scored the final three goals of regulation to force overtime with Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon, but the Blue Devils fell short of completing the comeback as the Colonials scored the sudden victory game-winner in the second overtime period.
Senior Amanda Toke's goal with 11:42 left in the game started the 3-0 run by the Blue Devils (5-8, 2-2 NEC) that erased the Colonials' (9-4, 3-1 NEC) 8-5 lead.
Neither team was able to score over the ensuing minutes, until sophomore Falynn McCartney scored on a free position shot with 2:15 left in the game. Just 49 seconds later McCartney was back at it as she passed to senior Meaghan McCurry who was cutting toward the goal. McCurry caught the pass and beat the keeper to tie the game at 8-8 with 1:26 left to play.
Robert Morris had one final chance to end the game in regulation, but the final shot attempt missed high in the final seconds.
The Colonials also had the final scoring chance at the end of the first overtime period. RMU's Jessica Karwacki's free position shot was knocked away by Blue Devils goalkeeper Morgan Tullar.
The stop was one of two that Tullar made in the first OT period. She finished the game with 14 saves, five ground balls and a caused turnover in over 67 minutes of action.
In addition to scoring and the assisting on CCSU's final two goals of the game, McCartney finished with a game-high six points. She had two goals, both in the second half, and registered four assists, including setting senior Claire Healy up for a goal in the final second of the first half.
Healy notched two goals on the day, including finding the back of the net as time expired in the first half. She also scored CCSU's first goal of the game on a free position shot.
Toke registered a hat-trick in the contest as she scored twice in the first half and then her second half goal sparked CCSU's final run at the end of regulation.
Toke also chipped in four caused turnovers, a ground ball and a draw control.
Freshman Courtney McPartland recorded three caused turnovers and a ground ball for the Blue Devils defense. Senior Cierra Ward caused a pair of turnovers, while six other CCSU players were credited with a single caused turnover for the game.
RMU's Lauren Robert scored the game-winner in the second overtime. She connected on a free position shot for the score.
The Blue Devils return to action next Friday against Bryant. That game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at Arute Field.
