Gina Riitano Named Assistant Lacrosse Coach
Head women's lacrosse coach Laura Campbell has added Gina Riitano to her coaching staff.
Head coach Laura Campbell has added Gina Riitano to the Central Connecticut women's lacrosse staff as an assistant coach. Riitano brings years of experience as a player and club coach to the Blue Devil staff.
"I am very excited to have Gina join the staff for my first season at CCSU," Campbell said. "Gina and I played together at American University, which gives us similar expectations of what our lacrosse program should look like on and off the field. Plus Gina's experience at the club level and her tireless work ethic will be a boost to our recruiting efforts."
"I would like to thank Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann and head coach Laura Campbell for this opportunity, it is truly an honor to be a part of this university and program," Riitano said. "Laura is a former teammate, respected collegiate coach and remarkable leader. I am excited to work under her as we strive to continue the success of the Blue Devil women's lacrosse program."
Riitano only played two seasons of lacrosse at American University, but she left a lasting mark. As a sophomore, she helped the team to a Patriot League Championship and earned First Team All-Patriot League recognition. She was also her team's Most Valuable Player that season. Riitano's 62 points (44 goals, 18 assists) that year set the American University single-season record.
In addition, as a freshman Riitano was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection.
Following her sophomore year Riitano transferred to Syracuse University where she finished her lacrosse career under head coach Lisa Miller.
Following her collegiate playing career Riitano stayed active in lacrosse in various ways while also pursuing a career outside of athletics.
Riitano's most recent coaching position was as the coach of the Upstate New York Girls at the 2013 Under Armour All-America Lacrosse. She also spent a season at the collegiate club level leading the Boston College women's lacrosse club. In addition, Riitano has spent time working with clubs such as Wildcat Elite Club, Washington Capital Club and the X-Team.
Riitano has also found ways to be a part of lacrosse outside of coaching. She most recently worked as a technical representative for Under Armour Lacrosse and previously worked as a team sales consultant for Breakaway Sports, as well as being a program manager for WomensLax.com.
In 2012, Riitano was inducted into the Albany Academy for Girls Athletics Hall of Fame. Riitano was a three sport athlete and Academic All-American when she attended Albany Academy for Girls. She is currently an active member of her alma mater's alumni council.
