Women's Lacrosse Reaches NEC Tourney With Home Win
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team earned a 11-9 victory over Sacred Heart and secured a NEC Tournament berth.
Sophomore Falynn McCartney sparked a first half comeback and the Blue Devils seniors helped lead Central Connecticut to a 11-9 victory over Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon. The Blue Devil (6-9, 3-3 NEC) victory paired with LIU Brooklyn's loss secured a NEC Tournament berth for CCSU.
The Blue Devils opened the game with a pair of goals by seniors Meaghan McCurry and Claire Healy, but Sacred Heart quickly responded with a 6-0 run over the next 13 minutes.
With the Blue Devils down 6-2, McCartney took over scoring three time during an eight minute stretch.
McCartney capped her streak by assisting on junior Brigit Hogan's game tying goal with 1:58 left in the half.
McCartney added to her tally by notching the first goal of the second half as well.
CCSU's 7-6 lead was quickly answered by the Pioneers (4-10, 2-4 NEC), who scored twice to retake the lead.
Senior Amanda Toke answered the Pioneer goals by controlling the ensuing draw and running straight to the goal for the tying score.
Toke gave CCSu the lead for good less than three minutes later with the help of sophomore Madison Hughes. Hughes helped the Blue Devils post a stop on defense and then quickly move the ball up field in transition.
McCurry followed with her second goal of the day and, after a SHU goal, freshman Alexandra Hooker notched her first goal of the game to give CCSU the 11-9 victory.
Seniors Cierra Ward and Ashley Olhausen helped anchor the CCSU defense in front of goalkeeper Morgan Tullar. Ward contributed a caused turnover and a pair of ground balls to the defensive effort.
Tullar made seven saves in goal to earn her sixth win of the season.
In addition to recording five points, McCartney also controlled a team-high five draws. Toke contributed four draw controls.
The Blue Devils will wrap-up the regular season on Sunday at LIU Brooklyn.
