Central Connecticut Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann has announced the hiring of Laura Campbell as the new head women's lacrosse coach. Campbell will take the reins of a Blue Devil program that is coming off the most successful campaign in its 14-year history.
"I am excited to welcome Laura as the next leader of Blue Devil lacrosse," Schlickmann said on Thursday, August 22nd. "I am confident she is the right person to continue the upward trajectory of our program as we strive to be a consistent contender for the Northeast Conference title in the sport of women's lacrosse. Laura brings a wealth of Division I experience as a student-athlete and as a head coach and has a track record of success at every stop in her career. She has a clear passion for the sport and believes in the model we embrace for our student-athletes, building Champions on and off the field of play. Laura is a great fit for Central Athletics and our lacrosse program."
"I am honored to have been selected and accept the position of head women's lacrosse coach at Central Connecticut. I would like to thank Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann and the entire Athletics Administration for allowing me this opportunity," Campbell said on Thursday morning. "Women's lacrosse is on the rise at CCSU and I am very excited to begin working with our student-athletes to continue the program's success on the field, in the classroom and in the community."
Campbell was the head coach at American University during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. While with the Eagles, she posted a 16-18 overall record and guided the team to a pair of Patriot League Tournament appearances. Her first season with American produced a 9-8 won-loss mark that tied for the best record in program history. That same season her team boasted the top grade point average among all Division I lacrosse programs.
Prior to American, Campbell was the head coach of the Marist Red Foxes for two seasons. Her Marist squads appeared in back-to-back Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship games, including a MAAC Championship victory in 2010 that earned the program's first ever berth into the NCAA Tournament. Over her two seasons, Campbell and the Red Foxes compiled a 22-13 won-loss record and set a program record with 12 wins in 2009.
Campbell most recently served as the head coach at Post University in Waterbury, CT. She spent one season helping the young Eagles program to several milestones. During the 2013 season, Post set program records for wins and road victories with Campbell's leadership.
Campbell has a career record of 38-31 as a Division I head coach and her teams have continuously reached postseason play. In addition, she has guided numerous student-athletes to individual accolades both athletically and academically.
A four-year starter for American University as a student-athlete, Campbell served as a team captain for two seasons. Her and her classmates set records for most wins in a season (9), which she tied as a coach, and wins by a class. She was also a member of the only Eagles team to reach the NCAA Tournament.
During her career she has coached or recruited 19 all-conference selections, one conference player of the year and placed more than 45 players on various academic award lists.
Campbell resides in Glastonbury with her husband John, and their three young children Grace, Addilyn and Reagan.
