Blue Devils Fall on the Road at UConn on Wednesday
Nehls leads Blue Devils with 16 points
The Central Connecticut men's basketball team dropped a 99-52 decision to the University of Connecticut at the XL Center on Wednesday afternoon. The loss puts the Blue Devils to 1-9 overall while the Huskies are now 8-3 after the victory.
Central was led by freshman guard Austin Nehls who had a team-high 16 points in the game. He was 5-of-11 from the field and hit three threes while going 3-for-3 from the line. Sophomore Shakaris Laney added nine points on 2-of-3 shooting and three free throws.
The Huskies were led by Daniel Hamilton who had 11 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in the win. Shonn Miller scored a game-high 25 points and added five boards for the Huskies. UConn outrebounded the Blue Devils 45-20 had 56 points in the paint in the victory.
The Blue Devils climbed within five at 25-20 in the first half, but the Huskies went on a 21-6 run to end the half and take a 46-26 lead at halftime. UConn shot 18-of-31 from the field in the half and 17-of-25 inside three point land.
They wouldn't cool off at all in the second half, shooting 20-of-32 from the field and 5-of-9 from three after the break. They had 56 points in the paint in the game and shot 32-of-48 inside the arc, good for 67 percent.
The Blue Devils shot just 17-of-49 from the field and 4-of-17 from three in the loss, good for just 34.7 percent. They also struggled from the free-throw line hitting just 14-of-26 in the game. Central had just nine assists and turned the ball over 19 times in the game, leading to 26 UConn points.
Nehls led the Blue Devils with 16 points and was the only double-figure scorer for the Blue Devils. He had three of the four threes in the game for CCSU.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Dec. 30 when they host Yale at 7:00 p.m. in Detrick Gym.
