CCSU Standout Javier Mojica Representing Puerto Rico at Pan Am Games
Mojica was NEC Player of the Year and led the Blue Devils to the NCAA Tournament in 2006-07.
Javier Mojica, a former standout with the Central Connecticut men's basketball program, is representing Puerto Rico at this summer's Pan Am Games in Toronto. The team is being coached by Rick Pitino and the roster includes current Dallas Mavericks point guard J.J. Barea.
The 12-man squad opens play on Tuesday, July 21, with a matchup against Brazil at 10:30 AM that will be available on ESPN3. Puerto Rico will play Team USA on Wednesday, July 22 (9 PM, ESPN3) and Venezuela on Thursday, July 23 (1:30 PM, ESPN3). The semifinals will take place on Friday, July 24, with the bronze medal and gold medal games to be played on Saturday, July 25.
As a senior in 2006-07 Mojica was named Northeast Conference Player of the Year after averaging 16.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and dishing out 108 assists in helping the Blue Devils to the NCAA Tournament and a 22-12 record. He finished his career with over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and ranks among CCSU's all-time leaders with 131 career three-pointers. Since departing Central, Mojica has enjoyed a successful professional career playing in Puerto Rico, South America and in Europe, while also representing Puerto Rico internationally.
The Pan American Games are the world's third largest international multi-sport Games; surpassed in size and scope by only the Olympic Summer Games and the Asian Games. This summer's games are taking place from July 10-26 and will include over 6,000 athletes representing 41 National Olympic Committees competing in 364 events across 36 sports.
