Volleyball's Kaprelyan Named Candidate for 2019 Senior CLASS Award
The award recognizes achievement in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Central Connecticut senior Madelyn Kaprelyan was named as one of 30 candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate volleyball it was announced Wednesday. The prestigous national award recognizes student-athletes who excel both on and off the court.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Kaprelyan is coming off a 2018 season in which she became the first player in CCSU program history to be named ECAC Offensive Player of the Year and Northeast Conference Player of the Year, while ranking second nationally with five triple-doubles. Kaprelyan was also recognized as the Northeast Conference Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2018 for her accolades in the classroom. A leader on the court, Kaprelyan is a team captain and helped the team win the NEC Team Sportsmanship Award. Kaprelyan and her teammates are active in the community, taking part in events such in the Ana Grace Project: Finish The Race, along with visits to and school supply drives for Smalley School in New Britain.
"Madelyn is one of those rare players who come around once in a blue moon," said CCSU head coach Linda Sagnelli. "No one is more competitive or tenacious on the court than Madelyn and I am fortunate to be able to coach her."
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
