AVCA Recognizes Volleyball for Academic Achievement
CCSU has earned the award in 13 consecutive seasons.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2018-19 season it was announced by the organization. The Blue Devils have achieved the team academic honor for 13 consecutive seasons, which is the sixth longest active streak.
"Our program takes great pride in our academic performance every year," CCSU head coach Linda Sagnelli said. "It's a great credit to the student-athletes who perform at a high level both on the court and in the classroom every year."
The AVCA honored an all-time high 1,125 teams across all levels, including 189 NCAA Division I programs. The AVCA Team Academic Award was instituted in 1992-93 to honor collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The Blue Devils had six student-athletes named to the Northeast Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, including Madelyn Kaprelyan who was named the NEC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In addition to the success in the classroom, Kaprelyan was named NEC Player of the Year and was one of three named to All-NEC teams. CCSU posted a 13-13 record and fell to eventual league champion, Bryant, in five sets in the conference semifinals. The Blue Devils were also recognized with the NEC Team Sportsmanship Award following the season.
CCSU will open the season at the Georgetown Invitational on Aug. 30-31.
