Swimming Splits Opening Meet With Sacred Heart and Saint Bonaventure
Blue Devils top Sacred Heart 200-137, Fall to Bonnies 211-133
The Central Connecticut women's swimming and diving team opened the 2017-18 season by splitting a home meet with Saint Bonaventure and Sacred Heart on Friday and Saturday. The Blue Devils were victorious by a score of 200-137 against the Pioneers, but fell 211-133 to Saint Bonaventure at the Jack Suydam Natatorium over the weekend.
Day two began with the 1 meter and 3 meter diving and Central sophomore Kirsten Bednarz finished third in the 1 meter event (192.00) and fourth in the 3 meter (189.65).
The Blue Devils posted a second place finish in the 200 yard medley relay, the first swimming event of the day. Junior Kaitlyn Troy, senior Maddy Garber, junior Victoria Poole and sophomore Erika Maercklein posted a time of 1:50.65 to finish just behind Saint Bonaventure.
Sophomore Valentina Gomez finished second in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:39.46. Just behind Gomez was classmate Grace Regan who finished in a time of 4:44.63.
Senior Lauren Czulewicz finished third in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 55.13.
Sophomore Alexis Fredricks won the 200 yard backstroke in a time of 2:06.58. Classmate Keelin Kendall was third with a time of 2:12.90.
Fredricks was fifth in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.11.
Gomez continued her impressive weekend with a first place finish in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:12.86. Sophomore Grace Fredricks was seventh in the same event with a time of 5:35.83.
Garber finished second in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.99. Regan was third in the same event with a time of 2:29.50.
The Blue Devils won the 400 yard freestyle with a time of 3:40.38. The team of Troy, Maercklein, Czulewicz and Alexis Fredricks finished off the meet with a win for CCSU.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Friday night, Oct. 20 on the road at UConn. They will also compete at Post University on Saturday, Oct. 21.
