Blue Devils Top Sacred Heart in Sprint Meet on Senior Night
CCSU honors its five seniors who competed at the Suydam Natatorium for the final time
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team honored its five seniors in a dual meet victory over Sacred Heart in a sprint meet at home on Friday night. The Blue Devils, who competed for the final time at home this season, honored seniors Maeve Awiszus, Lauren Czulewicz, Annemarie Durham, Maddy Garber and Luna Milne during the meet. The Blue Devils won by a score of 122-58.
The Blue Devils began the meet with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. The squad of junior Aidan Devers, Garber, sophomore Valentina Gomez and junior Kaitlyn Troy won in a time of 1:48.62.
Czulewicz then finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.51. Sophomore Alexis Fredricks was fourth in 25.84.
Garber placed first in the 100 IM with a time of 59.97, followed closely by sophomore Gracie Regan in 1:01.70 and Devers who swam a time of 1:02.73.
Durham won the 1 meter diving event with a score of 262.00.
Sophomore Valentina Gomez posted a win in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.87. Freshman Erin Brown was fourth in 28.40 and sophomore Keelin Kendall was fifth in 28.69.
Czulewicz posted her second runner-up finish, this time in the 100 freestyle in a time of 52.97. Sophomore Erika Maercklein was third in 53.62 and Regan fourth in 57.01.
Junior Kaitlyn Troy won the 50 backstroke in a time of 27.78. Alexis Fredricks was second in 28.32 and Kendall third in 28.63.
Gomez posted her second win of the night, this time in the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:57.43. Devers was close behind finishing in second place with a time of 1:58.96.
Garber won the 50 breaststroke in 30.20. Maercklein was second in 30.52 and Kendall third in 32.20.
The Blue Devils finished the meet with a first place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Czulewicz, Maercklein, Troy and Fredricks posted a time of 1:39.80 for the win.
