Swimming and Diving Competes at FAU with Fordham on Saturday
Garber posts wins in 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events
The Central Connecticut women's swimming and diving team finished their annual training trip to Florida on Saturday, competing in the morning at Florida Atlantic University. CCSU took on FAU and Fordham. The Blue Devils dropped a 172-87 decision to the Rams, and a 164.5-94.5 decision to FAU. Central now returns to Connecticut and will be in action on Jan. 20 at noon on the road at Northeastern.
The Blue Devils began the meet with a second place finish in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of junior Kaitlyn Troy, senior Maddy Garber, sophomore Valentina Gomez and senior Lauren Czulewicz swam a time of 1:50.41 to tie for second along with FAU.
Junior Aidan Devers finished ninth in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.06. Troy was fifth in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.28. Sophomore Keelin Kendall was eighth in the same race with a time of 1:03.48.
Garber finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke, winning by over a second with a time of 1:05.25. Sophomore Erika Maercklein was second in 1:06.48 and sophomore Gracie Regan was fourth in 1:08.79.
Gomez finished third in the 200 yard butterfly, swimming a time of 2:07.69. Czulewicz finished fifth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.00 flat. Following the diving event she finished sixth in the 100 freestyle in 54.47, while Maercklein was seventh in 55.24.
Senior Annemarie Durham posted a score of 239.32 in the 1 meter diving, finishing ahead of FAU's Lauren Beyer. Durham later posted a score of 218.02 in the 3 meter event.
Devers claimed first place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.54. She won by more than three seconds. Senior Maeve Awiszus was sixth in the same event in 2:14.76.
Garber posted her second win of the meet with a time of 2:21.75 in the 200 yard breaststroke. Kendall was fifth in 2:30.62. Devers continued her strong meet with a second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle, posting a time of 5:09.77. Maercklein was third in 5:13.40.
Gomez posted a time of 59.41 in the 100 yard butterfly to finish third overall.
Gomez was fifth in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:13.06. Garber finished seventh in 2:13.29.
Central ended the meet with a fifth place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The team of Troy, Maercklein, Czulewicz and Regan finished with a time of 3:43.38.
The Blue Devils return to action on Jan. 20 on the road at Northeastern beginning at 12 noon.
