Women's Lacrosse Wins Second Straight, Moves to 2-2 in NEC Play
Blue Devils are back at home on Friday hosting Bryant
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team won its second straight game with a 14-6 victory at home over St. Francis U on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils are now 3-10 overall and 2-2 in Northeast Conference play. St. Francis is 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the league. with the loss.
Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Branthover made 11 saves in the game to post her third victory of the season.
Prior to the game the Blue Devils honored the three members of their Senior Class, Madison Hughes, Elyse Malecki and Falynn McCartney. Senior Day was held on Sunday because it was the last weekend home game for CCSU this season.
With the game tied 2-2 the Blue Devils scored three straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with under 18 minutes to play in the first half. Junior Marissa Soto and McCartney each scored twice in the first 12 minutes of the game. Hughes added her 19th goal of the season to help the Blue Devils build the three-goal lead.
The Red Flash cut it to 5-3 on the second goal of the day from Holly Lawrence with 16:07 on the clock.
McCartney answered with her third and fourth goals of the game to make it 7-3 CCSU with 2:00 to play before the half.
Soto scored her third goal of the game to open the second half, and sophomore Kylie Sullivan added her first goal of the day to push the lead to 9-3. Malecki took a pass from Sullivan and scored her first of the game, making it 10-3. The assist was the fifth for Sullivan in the game.
Following a St. Francis goal, Soto's fourth goal made it 11-4 with under 14 minutes to play. Hughes scored again and then freshman Jenna Henningsen scored her first of the game, assisted by classmate Carson Adelberger, to make it 13-4. Hughes posted her third goal to make it 14-4 just minutes later.
Soto and McCartney each scored four goals for the Blue Devils in the victory. Hughes added three goals and an assist, while Sullivan had a goal and five assists.
The Blue Devils are back in action at home on Friday, April 22 at 5 p.m. hosting league-leader Bryant University.
