Women' Lacrosse Comes Up Just Short on the Road at Mount St. Mary's
McCartney scores three times in loss
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team dropped to 0-2 in Northeast Conference play with a narrow 11-9 loss on the road at Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon. Senior Falynn McCartney scored three times and classmate Madison Hughes added two goals and two assists in the loss for the Blue Devils. Central is now 1-10 overall on the season. The Mount improves to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in league play with the win.
The Blue Devils struck first and took a 2-0 lead on goals from McCartney and senior Elyse Malecki, less than two minutes into the game. The Mount responded by scoring four times in less than four minutes to build a 4-2 lead.
Hughes scored her first goal of the game to cut the lead to 4-3 with 24:03 to play before the half. The Mount answered again, this time scoring three straight goals to take a 7-3 lead. The Blue Devils answered again, this time scoring three goals of their own to cut the lead to 7-6. McCartney scored twice during the run, and freshman Jenna Henningsen added a goal on an assist from Hughes.
The Mount added a goal in the final minute before halftime to take an 8-6 lead.
Following halftime the Blue Devils scored first to cut the lead to 8-7. The Mount ended a 14 minute drought by either team and scored with 13:04 on the clock to push the lead to 9-7.
Another eight minutes went by without a goal and then Jessica Giangarra scored on a free position shot to cut the Mount lead to 9-8.
The Mount answered one final time, scoring twice in the final 2:36 to lead 11-8. Central freshman Carson Adelberger found the net with 22 seconds left to cut the final score to 11-9.
Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Branthover made six saves in goal for the Blue Devils in the loss.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Friday, April 15, at home vs. Robert Morris beginning at 4 p.m.
