Comeback Falls Just Short in Women's Lacrosse Home Loss to LaSalle
CCSU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Jacksonville
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team dropped to 0-6 overall on the season with an 8-6 loss to visiting LaSalle on Sunday afternoon in New Britain. The Blue Devils trailed 8-2 and scored four straight second half goals to cut into the lead but the Explorers held on for the win.
The Explorers improve to 1-5 overall on the season with the win. The Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday hosting Jacksonville on Arute Field at 11 a.m.
The Blue Devils struck first and took a 1-0 lead on the second goal of the season from freshman Carson Adelberger. She took a pass from senior Madison Hughes and gave the Blue Devils the lead.
The Explorers scored four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead with 7:30 left in the first half. Alle Ilgenfritz and Katelyn Fay each scored twice during the run to give the visitors the three goal lead.
Hughes cut the lead to 4-2 at halftime with her eighth goal of the season with 2:48 to play before the break.
Ilgenfritz's third goal of the game gave the Explorers a 5-2 lead with under 27 minutes to play in the game. Her fourth goal of the game came with 20:53 left and pushed the LaSalle lead to 6-2. Fay then scored twice in less than a minute to push the lead to 8-2 for the Explorers.
The Blue Devils began their comeback when Hughes scored her second goal of the game to cut the lead to 8-3 with 16:41 left. Sophomore Natalie Decker made it 8-4 with 16:03 left with her first goal of the season.
The run for the Blue Devils reached 3-0 on the first goal of the year from junior Jessica Giangarra, making it 8-5. Senior Elyse Malecki assisted on the goal. Senior Falynn McCartney cut the lead to two, 8-6, with 5:03 left.
Freshman Jackie Branthover made five saves in goal for the Blue Devils in the loss. Lucy Loughlin earned the win in goal for the Explorers. She made four saves.
Hughes led the Blue Devil offense with a pair of goals and an assist.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday at home hosting Jacksonville beginning at 11 a.m. on Arute Field.
