Women's Lacrosse Falls 8-7 vs. Iona on Saturday in Overtime
Blue Devils will return home on Wednesday hosting Manhattan at 4 p.m.
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team went to overtime but dropped an 8-7 decision to Iona in its home opener on Saturday afternoon. Senior Madison Hughes had a pair of goals and an assist in the loss.
The Blue Devils are now 0-4 overall on the season. Iona is 3-3.
Iona scored first but the Blue Devils answered with four straight goals over the next four minutes to take a 4-1 lead with 23:13 on the clock.
Senior Madison Hughes scored her first of two first half goals to tie the gamee with 27:32 to play. Freshman Jenna Henningsen gave the Blue Devils the lead with her second goal of the season. Senior Falynn McCartney's fourth goal of the season makde it 3-1, and Hughes scored her second of the half to push the lead to 4-1.
Iona answered with three straight goals before halftime, and held the Blue Devils scoreless over the final 23:12, to tie the game 4-4 at the break. Mary Kate McCormick scored twice for the Gaels in the half.
The Gaels took the lead 5-4 to open the second half, but junior Alexandra Hooker tied the game 5-5 for the Blue Devils with her first goal of the game with 27 minutes left. She scored her second goal of the game just 19 seconds later to give Central the 6-5 lead.
With Iona up 7-6, Hughes fed Henningsen for her second goal of the game and the Blue Devils tied the game with 11:33 to play in the second half.
The game went to overtime where Iona gained possession and held the ball untill there was under a minute on the clock. Jenna Tolzman scored the game-winner with 52 seconds left to give the Gaels their third win.
Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Branthover record 13 saves in the game for CCSU. Thea Leitman had eight for the Gaels in the win.
Hughes had two goals and an assist to lead the Blue Devils. Henningsen and Hooker each added two goals, while sophomore Kylie Sullivan had a pair of assists.
The Blue Devils are back in action with the second straight home games in a four-game stretch, hosting Manhattan on Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 4 p.m. on Arute Field.
