Blue Devils Place Fifth at New Englands
Monte Mullen led the team finishing in the top-ten.
The Central Connecticut men's golf team posted a fifth place finish at the 2013 New England Championships. The Blue Devils improved their team score from round one by five strokes on Sunday finishing 37 strokes over par.
The two-day, two-round tournament was hosted at Newport National Country Club in Newport, RI. The par-72 course played 7,244 yards long for the tournament.
The University of Connecticut (297/291/588) claimed the tournament championship, leading the field on both days. Rhode Island (295/305/600) and Hartford (300/302/602) placed second and third respectively behind UCONN.
Northeast Conference rival Bryant (308/299/607) was the only NEC school to finish ahead of the Blue Devils (309/304/613). The two teams rounded out the top-five finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Central finished ahead of NEC in-state rival Sacred Heart (314/303/617) by four strokes. The Pioneers finished sixth at 41 strokes over par.
Sophomore Monte Mullen (74/76/150) led his team this weekend finishing tied for 10th on the individual leader board. Mullen finished in the top-ten for the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season. He leads the team with four top-ten finishes in 2012-13.
Senior Matthew DeJohn (80/72/152) placed tied for 13th on the individual leader board after Sunday's round. DeJohn led his team in round two shooting the lowest round score, a 72, of the tournament for any Blue Devil.
Freshman Connor Murphy (79/77/156) finished 27th overall in his first New England Championship Tournament followed by Senior Captain Dan Fanion (76/82/158) who placed tied for 30th. Freshman Jack Ayers (83/79/162) finished 34th.
Central will compete next in the St. Peters Peacock Invitational on April 23rd. The tournament is scheduled for one day and will be hosted at Neshanic Valley Golf Club in Neshanic Station, NJ.
