Swimming and Diving Sweeps NEC Weekly Awards
Devers, Durham and Gomez named Swimmer, Diver and Rookie of the Week
After a weekend in which the Blue Devils swam against nationally-ranked Yale, and then defeated Northeastern for the first time in school history, the Blue Devils swept the weekly Northeast Conference Award on Tuesday.
Sophomore Aidan Devers, junior Annemarie Durham and freshman Valentina Gomez were named the Swimmer, Diver and Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
Devers accrued two victories and third-place finish for 21 points to help CCSU secure its first-ever victory over the Huskies. Devers swam the 200 backstroke in 2:04.68 and the 200 individual medley in 2:10.59 for the victories. Her 200 backstroke time is a top-5 showing in the conference this season. Against Yale, Devers finished third in 400 individual medley (4:34.34) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.04).
Durham picked up her third NEC Diver of the Week award after a stellar weekend for the Blue Devils. She qualified for NCAA Zones in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, setting school records in both events. The East Lyme, CT native earned the NCAA Zone times against #24 Yale, first with a school record and second-place score of 282.53 in Friday's 3-meter event, and then with a program record 272.34 in the 1-meter dive.
Durham helped Central Connecticut defeat Northeastern on Saturday by winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 280.35, a new pool record. Her victorious score of 286.27 in the 1-meter dive set another school and pool mark.
Gomez earned her third NEC Rookie of the Week award after an impressive weekend in the pool. She swam the 1,000 freestyle in 10:33.81 to finish third and the 500 freestyle in 5:13.02 for fifth against the Bulldogs on Friday. Her time in the 1,000 free was the fastest in the NEC this season outside of her own 10:32.19 back in October. On Saturday she finished second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:35.44) and 200 butterfly (2:09.59), and third in the 500 freestyle (5:13.55).
