Blue Devils Open Season at St. Bonaventure on Friday, Trail 100-86 After Day One
CCSU and the Bonnies continue action on Saturday morning beginning at 9 a.m.
The 2016-17 Central Connecticut women's swimming and diving team opened up its season on Friday night on the road at St. Bonaventure. The Blue Devils and Bonnies completed 11 events on Friday, with St. Bonaventure leading 100-86 after the first night of competition.
The remaining nine events in the meet will take place beginning on Saturday morning at 9 a.m., starting with the 3 meter diving.
The Blue Devils opened the night taking second and fifth place in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The team on junior Lauren Czulewicz, senior Sabree Thomas, freshman Erika Maercklein and freshman Grace Fredricks finished second with a time of 1:40.87.
Lauren Czulewicz then finished first in the 200 yard freestyle as the Blue Devils placed seven swimmers in the top 10 in the event. Czulewicz finished first in 1:55.45, while sophomore Aidan Devers was third in 1:57.76.
In the 100 yard backstroke, freshman Alexis Fredricks finished second in a time of 58.93 and Devers was third in 59.36.
Junior Maddy Garber placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.91 and Maercklein was second in 1:06.05. Senior Lisa Ward was fifth in a time of 1:08.23.
Freshman Valentina Gomez won the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 2:08.65 and Thomas was third in 2:12.74.
Maercklein finished second in the 50 yard freestyle in 25.09. Garber was second in the 200 yard individual medley in 2:11.94 while freshman Keelin Kendall was fifth in the same event in 2:13.61.
Gomez picked up her second first place finish of the night with a time of 10:32.19 in the 1,000 yard freestyle. Senior Julia St. Pierre was fifth with a time of 11:18.40.
The Blue Devils placed first in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:56.00. The team of Alexis Fredricks, Garber, Gomez and junior Maeve Awiszus was first, and the Blue Devils also finished third in the event. The team of Devers, Ward, freshman Katelyn Mann and sophomore Kaitlyn Troy came in in a time of 4:05.64.
Junior Annemarie Durham was third in the 1 meter diving with a score of 210.45. Freshman Kirsten Bednarz was fifth with a score of 183.45.
The two teams will continue the meet on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
