Baseball Falls to UConn at Home
Blue Devils return to action at Penn State on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The Central Connecticut baseball team slipped to 6-7 on the season after falling, 17-2, to UConn at home on Wednesday afternoon. The home game was the Blue Devils' last before embarking on eight straight road games beginning this weekend.
UConn opened the scoring in the second when Blake Davey led off with a single and stole second. He came home on a single by Max McDowell. The Huskies added six runs in the third, five in the fourth and five more in the fifth to round out the scoring. Two-run homeruns by McDowell and Vinny Siena highlighted the scoring for the visitors.
The Blue Devils got on the board in the fifth when junior Corey Lerche led off with a single and came around to score on a double by freshman Dean Lockery. After a wild pitch moved Lockery to third, senior Bryan Rivera brought him home on a fielder's choice.
Sophomore Brett Susi threw three shutout innings in relief with four strikeouts and sophomore Kevin Connolly threw a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout. Sophomore Austin Salnitis started for Central Connecticut.
Senior Dominic Severino and sophomore Franklin Jennings each added doubles for the Blue Devils' offense.
William Montgomerie earned the win for the Huskies, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings of work. Siena drove in six runs for the UConn lineup, while Jack Sundberg collected three hits.
Central Connecticut returns to action on Friday, March 27, with a three-game series at Penn State. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
