Baseball Falls to Stony Brook in Weather-Shortened Contest
Blue Devils outscored, 12-6, by the Seawolves.
Central Connecticut fell to Stony Brook in a weather-shortened baseball contest on Wednesday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field. The game was called due to lightning and rain in the top of the ninth inning with the Seawolves leading, 12-6.
The loss drops Central to 12-20 overall, while Stony Brook improves to 20-12 overall.
The Blue Devils struck in the bottom of the first with freshman Dean Lockery opening with a triple to center field. He scored on the next batter when freshman Ryan Costello knocked him in with a ground out to shortstop.
The Seawolves tallied runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead. They added to the lead with runs in the fifth inning on a single by Rob Chavarria and Malcolm Nachmanoff to make it 4-1.
After Stony Brook pushed the lead to four runs in the top of the sixth, Central came storming back in the bottom of the inning. Senior Dominic Severino led off with a walk and junior Matt Martinez doubled to put runners on second and third. A single by freshman Dylan Maher drove them both in to make it 5-3. A single by junior Connor Fitzsimons moved runners to first and second for freshman Nick Garland who doubled down the line in right field bringing home two runs to tie the game, 5-5.
The Blue Devils took the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Costello doubled to lead off and moved to third on a fly out. He came home on a sacrifice fly by Martinez to make it 6-5.
The Seawolves were unfazed and batted around in the top of the eighth to retake the lead. Jeremy Giles' three-run double capped off the seven-run inning to give the visitors the winning margin.
The game was called in the top of the ninth inning after the Seawolves had come to bat and had a runner on first base with one out. The lightning detector sounded and the teams and umpires attempted to wait it out and have the weather clear to no avail.
Costello and Fitzsimons each had two hits for CCSU and Maher drove in a pair of runs.
Giles had three hits and four runs batted in to lead Stony Brook. Nick Brass earned the win after pitching two innings in relief.
Central Connecticut returns to Northeast Conference play with an important four-game series at Wagner coming up this weekend. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. in Staten Island, N.Y.
