Sportman finished a standout career with the Blue Devils in May of 2014 and was selected by Oakland in the 27th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft in June.
Sportman began his professional career with Oakland's Rookie Arizona League affiliate the AZL A's. His play on the field earned him a promotion to Oakland's short-season New York Penn League affiliate the Vermont Lake Monsters during the summer.
Sportman would finish his first professional season with the Lake Monsters, earning an appearance in the league's all-star game and finishing with a .301/.333/.418 slash line over 38 games in Vermont.
