Halligan and Welch Pick Up NEC Weekly Honors
The pair earned NEC weekly awards after posting a 2-0 record this week in conference play, leading to NEC playoffs.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team went 2-0 last week in Northeast Conference play, clinching a spot in the 2013 NEC Tournament for the first time since 2010. Junior Kerriann Welch and freshman Kelly Halligan were honored by the NEC for their contributions to the team's current three-win streak. Welch was named Co-Player of the Week while Halligan picked up her first NEC Rookie of the Week honor.
Welch led the Blue Devils to an NEC Tournament berth with two important conference wins last week. In both matches, the Blue Devils entered the second half down by one goal. Welch tied the score in the second half in both matches and then followed up with an assist, one on the overtime game-winner against Bryant and another on CCSU's third goal against Wagner on Sunday. Welch totaled two goals and two assists for six points on the week. She tallied seven shots, all on goal.
Halligan played in both matches for the Blue Devils, contributing to CCSU's 2-0 week and NEC Tournament berth. She finished the week scoring her first career goal in Central's 3-1 win over Wagner on Sunday. She notched the third goal, an insurance goal, in a win that propelled the Blue Devils into the NEC playoffs.
CCSU will enter the playoffs as the number four seed and will travel to Loretto, PA on Friday, Nov. 8 to face off against top-seeded Saint Francis U.
