Gioielli, Alston Collect NEC Weekly Honors
Junior Joseph Gioielli and freshman Edwin Alston picked up Northeast Conference weekly awards on Monday night in a release by the NEC front office.
Junior Joseph Gioielli and freshman Edwin Alston of the Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team earned Northeast Conference indoor track and field weekly honors for their individual performances this past weekend at the Joe Donahue Games in Roxbury, MA, it was announced on Monday night in a release by the NEC front office. Gioielli was named the NEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week and Alston was tabbed the NEC Men's Rookie of the Week.
Gioielli claimed first place in an event in his third straight meet in as many weeks to secure his second NEC Track Athlete of the Week award so far this season. Trimming nearly 3.0 seconds off his season-best time, the junior raced to a first-place finish in the 800 meter run this past Friday at the Joe Donahue Games in Roxbury, MA. He bested a field of 38 runners inside the Reggie Lewis Center, clocking in a time of 1:51.50 to overtake Sacred Heart's Trevor Guerrera (1:53.12) for the Northeast Conference event lead. Gioielli's time also slots him 38th overall on the Division I leader board in the event and also ranks him seventh on IC4A performance list.
Alston also had a successful meet at the Joe Donahue Games on Friday as the rookie added a bronze medal to his resume while contesting in the 60 meter hurdles to pick up NEC Rookie of the Week accolades. Alston turned in a time of 8.24 in the finals heat, finishing behind only South Florida's Bruce Barclay and Northeastern's Shawn Bleichert. It marks the second time this month that the freshman, who has owned the NEC lead in the event since his performance in the season opener at the Yale Collegiate Invitational, clocked in under the qualifying standard for the IC4A Championships. Alston's latest effort, which shaved 0.05 seconds off his seasonal best, is now good enough to land him amongst the top-35 leaders on the IC4A performance list.
The CCSU men's indoor track and field team will return to action next as they travel to Boston, MA to compete in the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday, Jan. 30. The meet will be hosted by Boston University inside the BU Track and Tennis Center.
