Gioielli Wins 1,000 Meter to Lead Men's Indoor T&F at Great Dane Classic
The CCSU men's indoor track and field team competed at the 2016 Great Dane Classic on Saturday in Staten Island, NY.
Junior Joseph Gioielli claimed first place in the 1,000 meter run to lead the Blue Devils at the 2016 Great Dane Classic on Saturday. The meet was held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, NY which will also be the venue for this year's Northeast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Gioielli recorded his second straight victory in an event to open the 2016 indoor track and field season, claiming the gold in the 1,000 meter run on Saturday after earning the gold last weekend at the Yale Collegiate Invitational in the 800 meter run. The junior crossed the finish line with a time of 2:24.88 to top a field of 39 competitors. His time also qualified him to compete in the 1,000 meter run at the NEICAAA Championships in Boston, MA on Feb. 26-27 and at the IC4A Championships on Mar. 5-6. The time currently ranks him third on the NEICAAA indoor performance list and fifth on the IC4A performance list.
Kendall Walker led the way for the Blue Devils in the 60 meter dash. The junior recorded a 55th place finish out of 91 athletes clocking in a time of 7.14. He followed that up with a 45th place result in the 200 meter with a time of 22.81.
Freshman Richard Grudzwick picked up a nice finish in the 800 meter run for CCSU. The rookie turned in a 27th place finish out of 67 crossing the finish line at the 1:59.31 mark.
Alex Norstom recorded a 34th place finish in the men's mile on Saturday. The freshman completed the race at the 4:26.78 mark to earn the result in his first time contesting in the mile.
Senior Matt Walker was slotted 22nd overall in the 3,000 meter run after the veteran crossed the finish line with a time of 8:46.02.
In the 5,000 meter run, junior Tyler Raymond logged a top-10 finish for the Blue Devils. Raymond earned a ninth place result after finishing the race in 15:04.25.
A trio of Blue Devils recorded NEICAAA qualifying times in the 60 meter hurdles. Freshman Edwin Alston led the way with a 13th place finish and time of 8.37. Alston currently ranks tied for fifth out of 35 on the NEICAAA performance list. He was joined by classmate Tyrik Henry and sophomore Tyler Latham who finished 20th and 25th, respectively. Henry clocked in a time of 8.48 and Latham finished at 8.55.
The CCSU 4x400 relay team of Latham, Kendall Walker, junior Zach Andrews and freshman Quincy Sanchez combined to finish with a time of 3:26.53 to record a 20th place finish.
Sophomore Sam Borecki led the Blue Devils in the field events at the 2016 Great Dane Classic registering a fourth place finish in the pole vault. Borecki cleared 4.65 meters (15' 3") to earn the result. The clearance also qualified Borecki for the NEICAAA Championships where he currently ranks tied for 12th on the NEICAAA performance list.
Dashawn Putman recorded a seventh place finish in the high jump. The senior cleared 1.94 meters to earn the result. Freshman Amaziah Gadson joined Putman in the high jump. Gadson cleared 1.89 meters to finish 15th out of 34 high jumpers.
Sophomore Zach Torro paced CCSU in the throwing events. Torro recorded a 24th place finish in the shot put tossing the shot put 13.62 meters.
The CCSU men's indoor track and field team will return to action next on Friday, Jan. 22 at the Joe Donahue Invite. The meet will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury, MA.
