Alston Breaks School Record, Five Blue Devils Compete at IC4A Championships on Saturday
Freshman Edwin Alston broke the CCSU school-record in the 60 meter dash semi-final heat on Saturday at the IC4A Championships in Boston, MA.
Five members of the Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team competed on Saturday at the 2016 IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the BU Track and Tennis Center in Boston, MA. Sophomore Tyler Latham completed the heptathlon finishing second and freshman Edwin Alston broke the CCSU school-record in the 60 meter hurdles en route to advancing to the finals heat held on Sunday to highlight the action for the Blue Devils at the regional meet.
IC4A DAY TWO RESULTS
Latham, who held the lead in the heptathlon after the first day of competition with 2,917 points, completed the final three events of the heptathlon on Saturday totaling 4,950 points to record a second place overall finish.
The sophomore picked up right where he left off on Saturday opening the second day of competition with a runner-up finish in the 60 meter hurdles. He sprinted to a time of 8.51 to log the result and add 858 points to his score.
Latham followed with an 11th place result in the pole vault clearing 3.25 meters to pick up 418 points before finishing the heptathlon with a fifth place finish in the 1,000 meter run. He turned in a time of 2:50.83 in the 1,000 meter run to record the result and grab 757 points for his 4,950 point total.
Stefan Hoeller from Manhattan had a huge day on Saturday to edge out Latham in the heptathlon finishing with 5,087 points. Latham was second with 4,950 points ahead of Christopher Gabor (4,911) Alex Hedrick (4,872) and Stefan Buechele (4,772) to round rout the top-five.
Alston had an impressive day for the Blue Devils in the 60 meter hurdles. The freshman broke his own CCSU school-record (8.11) in the semi-finals heat clocking in a blistering time of 8.09. He advanced to the semi-finals heat after running 8.16 in the preliminaries for a ninth place finish and his semi-final time was good for fifth overall and advances him to the finals heat on Sunday.
Fellow classmate, Tyrik Henry, also competed in the 60 meter hurdles for CCSU on Saturday. The rookie sped to a 23rd place finish in the preliminary round with a time of 8.38.
Freshman Richard Grudzwick posted a huge personal-best time for the Blue Devils in the 800 meter run prelims on Saturday, clocking in a time of 1:52.70 for a 14th place overall finish. His previous best time was 1:55.18 which he set at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational earlier this season.
In the 200 meter dash prelims, junior Kendall Walker bolted to a new personal-best time of 22.08. The time bested his previous collegiate-best time of 22.15 that he set this year at the Northeast Conference Championships and earned Walker a 27th place finish out of 40 runners in the event.
Alston will return to action on Sunday in the final day of competition at the IC4A Championships for the Blue Devils in the 60 meter hurdles finals. The race is set to begin at approximately 11:45 a.m.
