Sacred Heart Shut-Out By Central 2-0
Reece Wilson scored his seventh goal of the season.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team blanked Northeast Conference in-state rival Sacred Heart 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils improve to 5-1-1 in the conference and 7-6-2 overall. Sacred Heart drops to 3-4 in the NEC and 7-7 overall.
The Blue Devils entered Sunday's game tied for second in the conference with Monmouth (9-3-2, 4-1-1). The win against Sacred Heart now gives Central a total of 16 points.
Just minutes before the half, sophomore Stephen Walmsley put Central up 1-0 in the 33rd minute. Senior Reece Wilson fired a shot into the Sacred Heart goal but the shot was saved. Senior Thomas Obasi took the rebound and attempted another shot which was again saved. Walmsley took advantage of the vacant goal and rifled in a score off of the second consecutive rebound on the play. The goal was Walmsley's second of the season.
In the second period of play Wilson punched in his seventh goal of the season in the match's 68th minute. Junior Manny Nobre fed the pass from the left side into the middle of the box where Wilson beat the keeper to his right with the score giving the Blue Devils the 2-0 advantage.
Central has scored six combined goals in the last two home match's and have only given up one score. They now have a total of 24 goals on the season.
Senior Blue Devil goalkeeper Anthony Occhialini chalked-up his fourth shut-out of 2012. Occhialini stopped the only shot-on-goal that the Pioneers attempted and played every minute in the box for Central.
The Blue Devils are back on the road as they face LIU-Brooklyn on October 26th. They will then head to Quinnipiac to square off against the Bobcats on November 2nd then back home on November 4th to host Bryant.
