Central Falls on the Road to Vermont 2-0
The Blue Devils lost their first game of the Vermont Fall Classic Friday night.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team lost to Vermont 2-0 in their opening game of the 2012 Vermont Fall Classic. The Blue Devils are now 1-2-0 after losing their second straight game following a home opener victory against Yale on August 31st. The Catamounts improve to 2-3 on the season.
Central will play their second and final game of the tournament on Sunday, September 9th at 11 a.m. as they take on the University of New Hampshire. The Wildcats (2-2-1) enter Sunday's contest coming off of a 0-0 draw against Niagra in the tournament's Friday afternoon game.
Vermont scored in the ninth minute of action as the Catamount's Jesse Scheirer put a header into the back of the net past senior keeper Anthony Occhialini. The goal came off of a cross from Sean Sweeney who was assisted by Zach Paul of Vermont to put the Catamount's up 1-0.
The second goal of the game came from Vermont's D.J. Edler. Edler took a thru pass from Danny Childs and beat the defense to give the Catamount's a 2-0 advantage over Central before the half.
Occhialini recorded five saves in the game off of seven shots-on-goal. The senior played 57:10 minutes of regulation before being relieved by sophomore Josef Abele who made one save. Vermont out-shot Central 16 to 13 with eight shots-on-goal to the Blue Devils' six.
