Blue Devils Fall 2-1 in Overtime
Overtime score gives Blue Devils first loss of the season
Hartford's Anthony Santago scored his second goal of the game, in the first overtime, as the Central Connecticut men's soccer team dropped its first game of the season, 2-1, on the road in West Hartford on Monday night. The Blue Devils are now 1-1 overall on the season.
The Blue Devils return to action on Friday as they travel to the University of Vermont tournament this weekend. Central will play the host Catamounts on Friday at 4 p.m., and then Sunday vs. New Hampshire at 11 a.m.
Hartford scored first in the ninth minute when Anthony Santaga took a ball over midfield and then beat the Central defense, and senior goalkeeper Anthony Occhialini for the 1-0 lead. The goal was the first allowed by the Blue Devils this season after a 2-0 shutout win at home over Yale on Friday night. The Hawks scored in the 92nd minute of the game, just two minutes into overtime.
The Blue Devils tied it up with 14 seconds to play before halftime on the second goal of the season from junior Eddy Bogle. Senior Reece Wilson, a 2012 Hermann Trophy finalist, fed classmate Jesse Menzies on a pass on the right side of the box. Menzies crossed to Bogle who scored just inside the left post to tie the game with 14 seconds left before the half.
The Blue Devils held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal before the break, and had three corner kicks.
The second half saw both teams have several scoring chances, but neither could capitalize in regulation. Santago took a a feed from David Bernhardsson and headed the ball past Occhialini for the game-winner.
Occhialini finished the night with three saves for the Blue Devils. Viltsu Tuumi had seven in the victory for the Hawks. Central outshot the Hawks 14-11, including 8-5 in shots on goal. They had seven corner kicks to just one for Hartford.
