Menzies Helps Men's Soccer to Win
Junior Jesse Menzies assisted on three of the Blue Devils four goals in the victory.
Junior Jesse Menzies recorded three assists as the Central Connecticut men's soccer team rolled to a 4-2 victory over Bryant on Friday afternoon. The win improves the Blue Devils to 7-6 on the season and 4-1 in Northeast Conference play.
The Blue Devils built a 2-0 lead with a pair of early goals in the first half. Junior Thomas Obasi scored the opening goal only five minutes into action when he headed a corner kick from Menzies into the net.
Ten minutes later Menzies sent another corner kick into the box. This time it was senior Aaron Durr who headed the ball past the keeper.
After halftime, Central wasted little time getting another point on the board. Junior Steven Bailey set up and launched a strike from 35 yards out that hit the crossbar and deflected into the goal. Bailey scored from a similar distance on Sunday in the win over St. Francis (PA).
After allowing a goal to Angelo Caputi of Bryant, the Blue Devils scored their final goal off the foot of freshman Stephen Walmsley.
Walmsley took a touch pass from Menzies and launched a shot from 25 yards out that beat the keeper and pushed the Central lead to 4-1. The score marked Walmsley's first collegiate goal and Menzies third assist of the game.
Bryant would add a goal in the 87th minute to make it a 4-2 game.
Junior keeper Anthony Ochialini earned the victory in the net. He made five saves and allowed one goal in 76 minutes of action.
The Blue Devils do not play again this weekend, but entered the day in a tie for second place in the NEC. Central could move into first place in the NEC depending on the results of the Fairleigh Dickinson and Monmouth's game being played tonight.
