Football Falls to Robert Morris
The Central Connecticut football team fell to Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon.
The Central Connecticut football team fell to Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon at Arute field. The Blue Devils (4-6, 2-2 NEC) allowed 40 first half points to the Colonials (5-4, 3-1 NEC) in the 54-21 loss.
Junior running back Rob Hollomonrushed for 131 yards and a touchdown in the loss. With his performance today, Hollomon's career total for rushing yards now stands at 2,388, which moves him past Clinton Dunston into third place on CCSU's all-time list.
Hollomon's touchdown was his 19th of the season. He is now one shy of tying Stan House and Justise Hairston for the program's single-season record of 20.
The Blue Devils received the game's opening kickoff and sophomore quarterback Nick SanGiacomoled CCSU on a nine-play, 74-yard scoring drive to take a 7-0 lead. The drive took just 3:14 off the clock and was capped by SanGiacomo floating a pass to the back corner of the endzone for senior Nick Bacarella. Bacarella pulled the pass in just inside the of the out-of-bounds line.
The touchdown pass was the 16th of the season for SanGiacomo who moves within one of Scott Dolch's single-season program record of 17.
Robert Morris kicked a field goal on its opening drive to start what would be a run of 47 consecutive points. CCSU fumbled on its second drive, with RMU using the short field to score a touchdown three plays later. The Blue Devils punted after their third drive stalled, while the Colonials picked up a field goal.
CCSU's next two drives ended in interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. Robert Morris followed with quarterback Paul Jones' second and third passing touchdownsof the half. The first going to Tyler Digby and the second to Deontae Howard. Jones had connected for a 11-yard touchdown pass to Duane Mitchell for RMU's first touchdown of the game.
Robert Morris increased its lead to 47-7 on a 14-yard touchdown run by Ryan Thermil in the third quarter.
CCSU added its second touchdown of the game with 6:17 left in the game as junior Darius Leecapped a 16-play, 79-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run.
The Blue Devils attempted an onside kick following the touchdown. Robert Morris recovered deep in CCSU territory and scored on their first offensive snap.
The Blue Devils landed the final score of the game on a 14-yard touchdown run by Hollomon. The score was set-up by a 53-yard run from Lee.
Lee finished with 89 yards on seven carries.
SanGiacomo was 10-of-26 in the game with one touchdown and four interceptions.
Junior Tyrell Holmes caught five passes for 63 yards in the game.
Senior Antwione Reese led the CCSU defense with 10 tackles in the game.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday at Duquesne. CCSU closes the regular season at Home on Nov. 23, against Bryant.
