Central Dominant in Home Win on Saturday
Blue Devils return to NEC action at Wagner next weekend
The Central Connecticut football team improved to 3-5 overall on the season with a 47-13 home victory over Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils return to action next Saturday on the road at Wagner beginning at 1 p.m.
Central led 35-0 at the half after scoring five touchdowns on only 25 offensive plays. Junior running back Rob Hollomon scored three of those touchdowns and rushed for 194 yards on just eight carries in the first half. He rushed once in the second half and finished the game with a career-high 212 rushing yards to go along with his three touchdowns. He rushed the ball just nine times.
Hollmon's first score came on the first drive of the game for the Blue Devils. He ran it in from 43-yards out to finish a six-play scoring drive for the Blue Devils, giving the home team a 7-0 lead.
His second score came less than three minutes later, this time from 29-yards out, and pushed the lead to 14-0 with 9:42 to play in the first quarter. The scoring drive took four plays and covered 73 yards and took only 1:50 off the clock.
His third touchdown was his most impressive of the day. Hollomon took the ball from his own six yardline and rushed 94 yards for the score. The play was the only one of the drive, and the rush was a new career-long for the junior.
Sophomore quarterback Nick SanGiacomo hit junior Tyrell Holmes for a pair of scores before halftime, pushing the lead to 35-0 before the break. The first strike came from 20-yards out. The second came from 43 yards with 1:55 to play before the break.
Senior Chris Linares posted a pair of interceptions before halftime. Central held Salve Regina to 107 yards of offense before halftime. Central had 356 total yards on 25 offensive plays.
The Seahawks got on the board with their first drive of the second half. Steven Wilken hit Dan Buonocore from 20-yards out to cut the Central lead to 35-7 with 12:00 left in the third quarter.
SanGiacomo finished the game 11-for-15 for 159 yards and two touchdowns. He didn't play in the second half.
Senior Jake White threw his first touchdown pass of the season in the third quarter, hitting classmate Nick Bacarella from eight yards out to push the lead to 41-7 with 6:25 left in the third quarter. The extra-point was no good. White finished the game 5-of-7 for 32 yards and the score.
Freshman Darius Cohen rushed for his first career touchdown to open the fourth quarter. Cohen ran for a career-long 67 yard score to push the Central lead to 47-7.
Central finished the game with 550 offensive yards including 359 on the ground. They ran just 50 plays and had the ball for only 23:31 in the game.
Defensively the Blue Devils forced five turnovers, including the two intercpetions by Linares.
