SanGiacomo, Linares Receive NEC Awards
CCSU football duo earns NEC Weekly Awards.
Central Connecticut football student-athletes Nick SanGiacomo and Chris Linares received weekly awards from the Northeast Conference on Monday afternoon. SanGiacomo was tapped as NEC Offensive Player of the Week and Linares earned NEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
SanGiacomo, a sophomore quarterback, was named NEC Offensive Player of the Week after completing 22-of-25 pass attempts for 263 yards and three touchdowns. SanGiacomo led the CCSU offense in a 52-17 victory over Wagner on Saturday. The 52 points are the most in a game for the Blue Devils since scoring 56 against Southern Connecticut in 2007.
SanGiacomo's accuracy was on display throughout the game as he connected on 88.0% of his passes, which is the highest mark for a Blue Devil in a game with 25+ attempts. His mark is also the highest for an NEC quarterback this season.
Linares, a senior defensive back from New Britain, was named NEC Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday after he blocked a field goal late in the second quarter of CCSU's win over Wagner. Wagner's David Lopez lined up for a 48-yard attempt late in the second quarter - a successful kick would have made it a 14-10 game. Linares rushed off the edge and blocked the kick. The loose ball was scooped up by senior Antwione Reese and returned into Wagner territory setting up a CCSU field goal for the final points of the half.
Linares also contributed five tackles, including four solo stops in the game. He also broke up a pass in coverage.
The Blue Devils are currently 4-5 on the season and 2-1 in Northeast Conference play. CCSU is tied for second in the NEC standings with the Robert Morris Colonials who visit Arute Field this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. and fans can watch live on NECFrontrow.com.
