Baseball Stops Quinnipiac, 9-3
Glynne wins first of the season
The Central Connecticut baseball team opened a weekend series vs. Quinnipiac with a 9-3 victory at home on Friday afternoon. Senior Harry Glynne won his first game of the season, and classmate Mitch Wells drove in three runs in the victory.
With the win the Blue Devils are now 12-9 overall and 6-3 in the Northeast Conference. Quinnipiac falls to 3-17 overall and 2-7 in the NEC.
The Blue Devils got on the board quickly, with three runs in the first inning. An RBI single from sophomore J.P. Sportman and a two-run home run from junior Tyler McIntyre gave Central the early 3-0 lead.
The lead reached 6-0 on a two-run double from Wells senior in the bottom of the fourth inning. The third run scored on the second error of the inning from the Bobcats, allowing Wells to score from second.
Quinnipiac registered its first hit and cut the lead to 6-1 with an RBI single from Forest Dwyer in the top of the fifth inning.
Central opened the lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the fifth. They loaded the bases with no outs, but the next two batters struck out. Central senior Jake Matuszak singled to centerfield with the bases loaded and two outs to make it 8-1. Wells drove in his third run of the game with a single up the middle to push the lead to 9-1.
The Bobcats got two back in the top of the sixth, cutting the lead to 9-3.
Glynne won his first game of the season, pitching seven innings and allowing just four hits and three runs. He struck out six and walked one in the victory. Freshman lefty Brendyn Karinchak pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit.
Wells finished the game with three hits and three RBI. McIntyre and Matuszak each drove in two in the win.
The two teams will continue their weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in New Britain.
