Baseball Wins 7-2 at Fairfield
Brown pitches seven innings to earn victory
Freshman lefty Casey Brown pitched seven innings and allowed just two runs and five hits to win his third game of the season on the road at Fairfield on Tuesday. The Blue Devils won 7-2, it was their third straight victory. With the win the Blue Devils move to 24-21 overall on the season. They will play at home on Wednesday hosting Hartford at 3 p.m.
Fairfield took the early 1-0 lead with a single run in the second inning.
The Blue Devils responded in the third, scoring three runs to take their first lead off the game. Central recorded three consecutive singles to open the frame. Sophomore Anthony Turgeon singled, went to second on a single from senior A.J. Lowers and then scored on a single up the middle from junior Chris Renzoni. Lowers and Renzoni advanced on an error, and then Lowers scored on an RBI groundout from senior Jake Matuszak. Renzoni scored on an RBI groundout from senior Mitch Wells to make it 3-1.
Central scored one unearned run in the fourth to make it 4-1. Sophomore Dylan DelaCruz doubled and then scored when junior Mike Washburn reached on an error.
The Stags struck again with a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 4-2.
Central answered in the eighth, with its second three-run inning of the game, building its lead to 7-2. Junior Tyler McIntyre singled home his first run of the game, and Washburn followed with a two-run double to push the lead to five.
Junior Nick Boyd pitched one inning without allowing a run, as did freshman Brendyn Karinchak.
DelaCruz ended the game with three hits, while Wells, sophomore J.P. Sportman and McIntyre each added two. Washburn had two RBI. One of the hits from Wells was a double, the 50th of his career, just one shy of the school record set by former Northeast Conference Player of the Year Tim D'Aquila.
The win is the third of the season for Brown, who is now 3-4 on the season. He struck out five and only one of the runs he allowed was earned.
The Blue Devils return to action on Wednesday hosting Hartford at 3 p.m.
