Four Blue Devils Named All-Conference
Sportman and McIntyre Named First-Team
Four Central Connecticut baseball players were named to the All-Northeast Conference Postseason Team on Wednesday night. Sophomore J.P. Sportman and junior Tyler McIntyre were named to the First Team. Senior Mitch Wells and sophomore Dylan DelaCruz were named to the Second Team at the pre-tournament banquet on Wednesday in Norwich.
The Blue Devils are the third seed in this week's NEC Tournament at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. They will play second seed Sacred Heart on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the tournament, which is double-elimination, will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
NORTHEAST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HOME
Sportman led the Blue Devils in hitting this season, and finished second in the NEC. The sophomore outfielder finished the regular season batting .357, after a final month which saw him raise his average 100 points. He had 39 hits in the final 20 games, and finished with a team-high 65 hits, while scoring 36 runs, hitting seven home runs and driving in 32 runs. He was the conference Player of the Week selection this week. His seven home runs are second on the team.
McIntyre in the First Team selection at first base, after leading the league in home runs with 10, and leading the Blue Devils in runs batted in with 38. He batted .287 on the year, with 19 extra-base hits and a slugging percentage of .530.
Wells is an All-Conference selection for the third straight season at third base. He was named to the Second Team. Wells, among the all-time leaders in just about every category in school history, batted .313 with 60 hits, two home runs and 31 runs batted in. He scored 35 runs, and recently started his 200th consecutive game in a CCSU uniform. He has played in 205 career games, and made 204 starts during his time in New Britain.
DelaCruz had a spectacular last month of the season, and finished the year with a .330 average, the second-highest on the squad. He had 60 hits, 38 runs scored, 23 extra-base hits and 24 runs batted in. He was chosen to the second team in the outfield.
