Baseball Sweeps Quinnipiac 6-5 and 3-2
Ingham saves both ends of doubleheader
Sophomore Josh Ingham saved both ends of a doubleheader as the Central Connecticut baseball team swept Quinnipiac 6-5 and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in New Britain. Freshman lefty Cody Brown earned his fourth win of the year as the Blue Devils won game one. Junior Jack Greenhouse picked up his second win of the season in game two.
With the sweep the Blue Devils are now 14-9 overall and 8-3 in Northeast Conference play. Quinnipiac is now 3-19 overall and 2-9 in league action.
In game one, Quinnipiac scored first with a single run in the top of the second inning.
The Blue Devils scored four runs using five consecutive hits in the bottom of the fourth inning.
With one out sophomore Anthony Turgeon doubled and went to third on a single from sophomore Dylan DelaCruz. Junior Chris Renzoni singled to left to score Turgeon and make it 1-1. Senior A.J. Lowers doubled down the left field line to score the second run. Ingham singled to score the next two runs and make it 4-1.
Two more runs in the fifth inning pushed the lead to 6-1. Sophomore J.P. Sportman singled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Renzoni drove in his second run of the game to score the second run of the inning.
The Bobcats scored four runs on four hits and an error in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-5. Brown exited the game after facing four batters in the inning. He finished his outing allowing four earned runs in five innings, while striking out one, and won his team-leading fourth game.
Ingham got out of a jam in the sixth, holding the lead at 6-5, and then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn his fourth save of the season.
The Bobcats struck first in the second game, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to lead 2-0. The Blue Devils got one back, making it 2-1, on an RBI single from junior Tyler McIntyre in the bottom of the inning.
Central took the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. The first four batters reached base, including an RBI single from senior Mitch Wells. The second run scored on a double play, giving the home team the 3-2 lead.
Greenhouse started the second game and pitched the first six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs. He didn't allow a run after the first inning and allowed only five base runners in his final five innings of work. He is now 2-0 on the season.
Ingham pitched a perfect seventh inning of relief in the second game, earning his fifth save of the season and his second of the day.
The two teams will finish the weekend series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
