Baseball Drops Doubleheader at FDU
Blue Devils homer five times in doubleheader
The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped a pair of games on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, losing the first game 12-7 and going extra-innings to lose the second 8-7.
With the losses the Blue Devils are now 19-18 overall and 11-11 in Northeast Conference action. FDU improves to 18-17-1 overall and 12-6 in the NEC.
Junior Tyler McIntyre and sophomore J.P. Sportman each homered twice in game one, as the Blue Devils hit five home runs on the day.
Sportman finished game one with four hits and three runs batted in. His two home runs give him five on the season. McIntyre now leads the team with seven home runs following his pair in game one. Junior Mike Washburn had three hits in the loss.
In the first game the Knights took a 5-0 lead in the second inning using five hits against Blue Devils starter Harry Glynne to score five times. They added one in the third to make it 6-0.
McIntyre hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season to score the first run of the game in the fourth inning for CCSU. FDU answered with three more runs in the bottom of the inning to build the lead to 9-1.
Central climbed back with two runs in the fifth inning to make it 9-3. Senior Mitch Wells walked and scored on an RBI double by sophomore Dylan DelaCruz. DelaCruz scored on a double from classmate Anthony Turgeon.
A pair of home runs in the seventh made it 9-6. Sportman's inside the park home run scored a pair of runs, and McIntyre's second home run of the game, and seventh of the season, made it 9-6.
The Knights added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to push the lead to 12-6. Sportman's second home run in the ninth made it 12-7.
In game two,the Knights used an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim the 8-7 win and take both games. The game was scheduled for seven innings.
Central took a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the second. Sportman drove in his fourth run of the day with a groundout in the first inning. In the second senior Jake Matuszak and Wells each drove in a run to make it 3-0.
FDU answered in the fourth inning with six runs off of Blue Devils freshman starter Cody Brown.
Matuszak drove in his second run of the game in the fifth, cutting the lead to 6-4. FDU answered with one in the sixth to make it 7-4.
The Blue Devils pushed three runs across the board in the top of the seventh inning, sending the game to extra innings. Bobby Migliazza homered, and Wells drove in two runs with a double to tie the game.
FDU scored in the eighth to claim the win, and the sweep on the day. The teams will continue their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The first game will be seven innings, followed by the nine inning series finale.
