Baseball Falls 7-4 at UConn
Blue Devils open weekend series vs. Quinnipiac on Friday
Senior Jake Matuszak had a pair of hits and two runs batted in but the Central Connecticut baseball team saw its three-game win streak stop at UConn on Wednesday with a 7-4 loss. With the loss the Blue Devils fall to 11-9 overall on the season.
The Blue Devils begin a weekend series at home vs. Quinnipiac on Friday at 3 p.m.
Central outhit the Huskies 10-8, but couldn't overcome a three-run hole in the first two innings of the game. The Blue Devils scored first on a sacrifice fly from junior Tyler McIntyre in the first inning.
The Huskies answered with three runs in the first and one in the second for a 4-1 lead.
They built the lead to 7-1 with two two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth inning.
Central climbed back, scoring two in the seventh and then one in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-4. They would get no closer and see their three-game winning streak stopped.
In the seventh inning, junior Mike Washburn singled and went to third on a double from senior Danny Hickey. Junior Nick Palmisano's sacrifice fly scored the first run of the inning, and Matuszak's RBI single made it 7-3.
In the eighth inning McIntyre singled and went to third on a double from sophomore J.P. Sportman. McIntyre would score on a throwing error by the pitcher to make it 7-4.
Freshman Jesse Frawley picked up the loss on the mound for the Blue Devils, pitching four innings and allowing six hits and five earned runs. Freshman Mike Krukiel and junior Todd Savatsky each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Matuszak and Sportman each had a pair of hits in the game. Matuszak, McIntyre and Palmisano each drove in a run.
The Blue Devils return home on Friday, hosting Quinnipiac in a single game beginning at 3 p.m. They will also play a doubleheader on Saturday and a final single game on Sunday, both at 1 p.m.
