Women Play St. Francis (PA) to 1-1 Draw
Sophomore Jewel Robinson scores lone goal for CCSU against defending conference champs
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime draw against St. Francis (PA) on Friday night. Sophomore Jewel Robinson scored her second goal of the season, helping Central Connecticut move to 3-3-5 overall and 0-1-3 in Northeast Conference play.
St. Francis (PA), the defending league champs, is now 6-5-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the NEC. The game was the sixth overtime contest of the season for the Blue Devils.
Robinson scored the game's first goal at 73:09 with a strong shot from outside of the top of the box. Robinson gathered the ball from 40-yards out, settled herself and fired a strong shot to the left lower corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead for the Blue Devils.
The Red Flash tied the score with under 10 minutes to play in the game. Tesa McKibben scored her eighth goal of the season off a pass from Eloa Nascimento. Nascimento sent the pass through the Blue Devil defense and McKibben finished into the lower right side of the goal to tie the score.
Central had a great chance at the end of the first overtime period, but the clock expired just before they were able to get a shot on goal.
The Red Flash had the best chance of either team in the overtime periods. Nascimento took a pass through the CCSU defense, and had a one-on-one chance against Central's Nikola Deiter. Deiter stopped the point blank shot at the top of the box to preserve the draw.
Deiter finished the game with six saves, none more impressive than her save in the second overtime. Red Flash keeper Brianna Butcher finished with five stops.
Central had a 13-11 advantage in total shots. The Red Flash had a slight 7-6 edge in shots on goal. CCSU had five corners to just two for St. Francis (PA).
The Blue Devils return to action at home on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m., vs. Robert Morris. The game will be played at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
