Maguire's Goals Lead CCSU to 2-2 Draw
Freshman leads the Blue Devils in scoring this season
Freshman Rosie Maguire scored twice in the second half to help erase a 2-0 deficit as the Central Connecticut women's soccer team played to a 2-2 double overtime draw on the road at Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon. The game was the Northeast Conference opener the Blue Devils.
With the draw the Blue Devils are now 3-2-3 overall and 0-0-1 in NEC action. Sacred Heart, which was 3-0-1 in its last four games and had won three straight, is now 5-2-3 and 1-0-1.
The Pioneers led 1-0 at halftime after a goal from Lucy Gildein at 30:43.
They stretched the lead to 2-0 less than two minutes into the second half. Amanda Stiles scored her fifth goal of the season at 46:19, giving Sacred Heart the two goal edge.
Trailing 2-0, Maguire scored her first goal of the game at 55:41 to cut the Pioneer lead in half. The score came on a penalty kick, it was her fourth goal of the year.
Her second goal of the game, and her fifth of the season, came eight minutes later, tying the game at 2-2. She took a pass from sophomore Allison Kelley and scored into the top right corner of the goal. Her shot came from the top of the box.
Sophomore Nikola Deiter made five saves in goal for the Blue Devils. Sacred Heart held a 15-10 advantage in total shots. Both teams had seven shots on goal.
Central will return to action on Friday, Sept. 30 at Bryant beginning at 3 p.m. They will also play on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
