
Last Second Shot Sinks Women's Basketball, 64-63
The CCSU women's basketball team fell to Wagner, 64-63, at home on Saturday to drop to 10-16 overall and 7-8 in league play.
Wagner's Jasmine Nwajei drove and made a layup with 1.7 seconds left to upset the Central Connecticut women's basketball team, 64-63, at home on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils had a last chance opportunity to win the game, but sophomore Emma Stroyan's three-pointer at the buzzer caromed off the back iron.
The loss drops the Blue Devils to 10-16 overall and 7-8 in Northeast Conference play. Wagner is now 5-21 overall and 3-12 in league play. Central will host Mount St. Mary's on Monday night at 7 p.m. in Detrick Gym.
Senior TeJahne Malone led the way for the Blue Devils in the setback with 11 points and 15 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by sophomore Camden Musgrave and senior Kayla Miller who had 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Blue Devils led 30-28 at the half but shot just 12-of-34 from the field before the break, just 35.3 percent. They were 3-of-13 from three. Wagner was 10-of-29 from the floor and 2-of-8 from beyond the arc.
In the second half the Blue Devils built the lead to as many as 8, 48-40, with 3:20 left in the third quarter. Wagner would run off a 10-2 run to make it 51-50 just before the end of the period. Freshman Kiana Patterson hit three free-throws as time expired in the third quarter to push the lead to 54-50.
In the fourth quarter the Blue Devils again led by eight, 60-52, with 5:35 to play in regulation. They would score only three more points in the quarter, as Wagner finished the game on a 12-3 run over the final 5:12 to claim the victory. The Blue Devils were just 1-of-7 from the field during the run but led by one (63-62) with 43 seconds on the clock.
Nwajei's layup with under two seconds to play gave the visitors the victory. She led all scorers with 40 points but was just 13-of-38 from the field in the game.
Malone had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds, her fifth of the season. Musgrave added 12 and a pair of steals, while Miller had 10 points to go along with eight rebounds. Central outrebounded the Seahawks 51-40 in the game and held Wagner to 33.8 percent shooting (22-of-65). The Blue Devils shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) and hit just 5-of-24 from three.
Central returns to action on Monday night hosting Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m. in Detrick Gym.
