CCSU Women Drop 59-55 Decision at Home to Mount St. Mary's
Blue Devils are now 7-9 in NEC action this season
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team dropped to 10-17 overall and 7-9 in Northeast Conference play with their second straight home loss on Monday night. The Blue Devils, who led by as many as five and trailed by as many as eight in the game, dropped a 59-55 decision to Mount St. Mary's in Detrick.
The Blue Devils led 11-6 early in the first quarter, their largest lead of the game, before the Mount ran off six straight points to take a 12-11 lead. The team's played an even first quarter and were tied at 16-16 at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.
The Mount took a 33-31 lead at halftime after holding the Blue Devils to 10-of-28 shooting from the floor. The Blue Devils hit 5-of-10 from three, but only 5-of-18 from inside three in the first half. Senior Kayla Miller led the Blue Devils with eight points and seven rebounds.
The Blue Devils trailed by only one, 45-44, at the end of the third quarter, fueled by three three-pointers from freshman Andi Lydon during a span of four possessions. The Blue Devils were down five and eventually tied the game 44-44 with 1:30 to play in the quarter.
Central took a 53-51 lead with 4:23 to play in the fourth quarter but would manage only two more points in the final 4:23. The Mount scored four straight points to take a 55-53 lead, and then senior TeJahne Malone hit a jumper with 37 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 55-55.
The Mount took their final lead of the game on their final possession, as Sarafina Arthur-Wiliams hit a layup underneath the hoop and was fouled, pushing the Mount lead to 58-55. Katrice Dickson added a free-throw in the final five seconds.
Central was led by Lydon's nine points, all on threes, and Miller who added eight points and nine rebounds. Malone added eight points, five rebounds and four assists in the loss. Senior Nicole Ferguson also added eight points, including a pair of threes, in the game.
Central is back in action on Saturday hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils will honor their Senior Class prior to the tip.
