CCSU Softball Rallies to Defeat SHU in Doubleheader

LOCATION: New Britain, CT / CCSU Softball Field

KEY MOMENTS  

GAME ONE 

• Ava Cino hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Blue Devils an early 3-0 lead. 

• Central added two runs in the bottom of the third with two solo homers, one from Paige Stringer and the other from Kendall LaMorte. 

• In the next inning, CCSU made it 6-0 when Ashlyn Desaulniers lined out to left, driving in Skylar Warn. 

• The Pioneers attempted to rally in the visitors' portion of the seventh. With two outs, Jenna Mowad hit an RBI double to drive in two runs. In the next at bat, Amy Petrovich hit a two-run homer to make the score 6-4. The Blue Devils were able to end the inning and secure the win when Kaylee Whittaker struck out Alyssa Gonzalez swinging. 

GAME TWO 

• SHU got on the board in the top of the first when Carly Koltko hit an RBI double to right center to drive in a run. Emily Carroll then singled and advanced on an error to score Koltko. 

• The Pioneers expanded their lead with a Gonzalez homer in the top of the third. 

• CCSU threatened in the home portion of the third, putting runners on first and third. Sacred Heart was able to end the inning and get out of trouble when Stringer popped up to shortstop. 

• Kim Howard hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 3-1. 

• Gonzalez sent another one over the fence for a two-run homer in the top of the fifth. 

• The Blue Devils trimmed the Pioneers lead in the bottom of the fifth when Stringer hit an RBI double to score runners on second and third. 

• In the next inning, SHU scored a sixth run when Mowad hit a double down the left field line to bring Sam Kowalski home. 

• Central was able to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Desaulniers built momentum for the Blue Devils by doubling to center to score Brooke Fedison. Howard then drove in a second run, hitting an RBI double. CCSU was able to seal the deal when Cino singled down the left field line to drive in the final two runs. 

NOTES   

• CCSU had four players hit homeruns today including Ava Cino, Kendall LaMorte (the first of her collegiate career), Paige Stringer, and Kim Howard. Three of the runs were hit in game one, the most they have hit in a single game so far this season. 

• The Blue Devils had 19 hits, nine in game one and ten in game two. 

• Whittaker earned both wins in the pitching circle, improving her record to 13-5. 

• Central stole three bases in each game, six total. (Gorman (3), Desaulniers (2), and Fedison (1))
