Camara Walks-Off to Complete the Sweep Over LIU Brooklyn
Senior Brittany Camara crushed a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday.
The Central Connecticut softball team extended its win streak to three games on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over LIU Brooklyn in New Britain, CT. CCSU shutout the Blackbirds 9-0 in five innings in game one and rallied back after being down 3-0 early in the second game to defeat LIU 14-9 in six innings on a walk-off three-run homer from senior Brittany Camara.
The Blue Devils advance to 14-19 and 5-3 in the NEC and LIU falls to 13-20 and 2-3 in the league. Camara had an elite day, going 6-for-9 (.667) at the plate with eight RBI and scored four times. The game-ending home run was Camara's first jack of the season.
GAME ONE
Sophomore Peyton Silverman held the Blackbirds to just three hits as she completed her eighth complete game and third shutout of the season in the first contest. The Blue Devils were quick out of the gate and took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
CCSU would tally four more runs in the bottom of the third inning started by a lead-off single from senior Brittany McNulla that was followed by a hard-driven triple to right center from senior Gianna Hathaway.
The Blue Devils earned two additional runs in the bottom of the fourth inning that would end the game early in five innings.
Central out-hit LIU 10-3 in the match led by Camara who went 3-for-4 with a double. Camara, Hathaway and senior Tori Constantin all tabbed a pair of RBIs.
GAME TWO
CCSU rallied back from trailing 3-0 after the Blackbirds put together a three run first inning, to downing LIU 14-5 in sixth innings. The offense attack began in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Emily Cronin beat out a single to the shortstop that scored Hathaway from third.
LIU responded in the top of third inning with an RBI-single from Evie Claussell to move the lead back to three runs 4-1.
Central Connecticut erupted for four runs on six hits and one error the bottom of the fourth inning to take its first lead of the contest, 5-4. McNulla ignited the surge with a lead-off double to right center field. Sophomore Giuliana Hathaway brought McNulla on a single up the middle and advanced to second an error from third base.
Camara then fired a double down the right field line that scored two Blue Devils and the senior would then find her way home after another single down the right field line from junior Kaitlin Paterson.
Despite LIU tying the game back up at 5-5, the Blue Devils launched back-to-back homers from senior Lex Debrosse and freshman Sydney Bolan in addition to three more hits to take an 11-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Facing a bases loaded situation with one out, Silverman forced LIU into two routine infield fly balls to get out of the inning unharmed. Contantin and Cronin double and singled in the bottom of the sixth inning to set up a three-run jack to right field off the bat of Camara to seal the sweep over the Blackbirds.
Camara tabbed six RBIs (3-5) and Constantin went 3-for-4 with a double to lead Central to out-hitting LIU 17-10 for the game.
Silverman earned the win and advanced to 4-5 on the year.
Central Connecticut will travel next to Boston University on Wednesday, April 11 for a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
