Sargent Throws Shutout, Softball Splits on Sunday
Senior Emily Sargent gave up just three hits in her first shutout of the season against Iona.
The Central Connecticut softball team split a pair of non-conference games on Sunday, March 25 in New Britain, CT at CCSU Softball Field. The Blue Devils shutout Iona 6-0 in game one and fell to the Patriot League's Boston University in the second match of the doubleheader.
CCSU (9-14) will take the field next on Wednesday, March 28 at Albany for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p[KS1] .m.
GAME ONE
The Blue Devils' ace, senior Emily Sargent pitched her 10th complete game and her first shutout of the season against Iona. Sargent advances to 5-6 on the year after surrendering just three hits to the Gaels.
Junior Kerri Dadalski and senior Tori Constantin both collected their first homeruns of the season. Central cruised out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Dadalski's lead off jack to center field pushed the Blue Devil lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second, and Constantin's homer in the fourth inning would put the Gael's behind by a four-run margin.
CCSU pressed on the gas in the bottom of the fifth inning and recorded three singles and tacked on two more runs.
Senior Brittany McNulla and Dadalski both went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Blue Devil attack. Sophomore Emily Cronin racked in her first double of the season.
Central out-swung the Gaels 10-3 and struck out just once against Iona's two pitchers Jessica Harkness (L, 2-1) and Samantha Bender.
GAME TWO
The Terriers went with their stud pitcher Ali Dubois (9-4) as they downed Central 6-2 in game two. Senior Lex Debrosse carried the Blue Devil offense going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, CCSU's lone runs in the contest.
Freshman Ashley Antonazzo started in the circle for Central and moves her record to 2-3 after pitching the first two innings. Sargent relieved the rookie to finish out the game.
BU scored two runs in the top of the first brought on by three singles. Brittany Younan would triple in the second to extend the lead to 3-0.
After Boston scored three more runs to build a 6-0 edge, Central Connecticut would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Debrosse delivered a bases-loaded single up the middle that scored sophomore Emily Cronin and freshman Kristen Ulmer.
The Terriers improved to 16-14 after both teams were held scoreless in the final two innings.
