Softball Sweeps Robert Morris, Constantin Tabs Two Homers
CCSU will face Fairfield on Wednesday on the road at 3:00 p.m.
The Central Connecticut softball team swept a pair of games at Robert Morris on Sunday in Moon Township, PA. The Blue Devils won 6-1 in game one and 4-3 in game two at the North Athletic Complex.
Senior Tori Constantin homered once in both games and junior Kaitlin Paterson was a perfect 3-for-3 in the first game and drew three walks in the second game to lead the CCSU offense. Central Connecticut advanced to 16-25 and 7-5 in the NEC and the Colonials drop to 10-30 and 1-9 in the league.
GAME ONE
The Blue Devils scored one run in their first at bat. Senior Tori Constantin homered a solo shot down the left line and Paterson collected an RBI single to left field that scored senior Brittany Camara to add onto CCSU's lead.
Holding a 3-0 edge, freshman Sydney Bolan scorched a single down the right field line that brought Paterson home in the top of the second inning.
Sophomore pitcher Peyton Silverman surrendered her only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single to the right-center field gap.
The third, fourth, fifth and sixth inning were scoreless in a quality defensive showing from both teams.
Debrosse hit an RBI double down the left field line that scored Paterson from second base in the top of the seventh inning. Fellow senior Brittany McNulla then recorded a sacrifice fly to score Debrosse later in the inning to push the Blue Devil lead to 6-1.
Silverman struck out seven Colonials and gave up fourth hits in the circle for CCSU.
Senior Gianna Hathaway launched two doubles in the game and Camara hit a three-bagger to lead CCSU.
GAME TWO
The second game of Sunday's doubleheader proved to be a much tighter contest. Robert Morris struck first in the bottom of the second inning on a solo homer from Katie Isenberg.
Central Connecticut found themselves down 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning following another solo jack from Abrielle McCartney.
Constantin gave the Blue Devils life in the top of the sixth inning after smacking a three-run dinger over the left field fence that scored Hathaway and Bolan, giving Central the 3-2 edge.
The Colonials would not go quietly as they tied the game on a throwing error from the Blue Devils catcher in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Camara then led off the top of the seventh inning with a bunt single and advanced to second base on key small-ball play. Debrosse's single to center field scored Camara with ease to give CCSU the 4-3 edge.
The Central defense held strong in the bottom half of the inning to seal the RMU sweep.
Silverman earned both wins for the day and advances to 6-8 on the season. The sophomore pitched three innings in game two and gave up just one hit and relieved senior Emily Sargent who pitched the first four innings.
The Central Connecticut softball team will travel to Fairfield on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. game at Alumni Softball Field.
