The Central Connecticut softball team dropped a non-conference game at Fairfield 14-4 in five innings on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Stags out-hit CCSU 12-3 for the game and advance to 19-24 on the season. With the loss Central Connecticut drops to 16-26 on the year.
The Blue Devils will host Mount St. Mary's for a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 29 on Senior Day in New Britain, CT. Prior to the first game at noon, a special ceremony will be held to honor the careers of the Blue Devil Class of 2018.
The Stags lead off the bottom of the first inning with a lead-off double off the bat of their second baseman Mikayla Rubin. Rubin would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt and then score the game's first run on a sac fly to center field from Courtney Hankins.
Fairfield ignited a two-run bottom of the second inning with another lead-off double off of CCSU junior pitcher Alex Casañas. The Stags posted a pair of consecutive RBI-singles to take a 3-0 edge.
Central Connecticut's junior second baseman, Kaitlin Paterson, collected the first hit for the New Britain crew in the top of the third on a single through the left side of the infield. Senior catcher Brittany McNulla handed CCSU its first run on a deep sac fly to center field that scored fellow veteran Brittany Camara from third who reached base earlier in the inning after getting hit by a pitch.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Antonazzo relieved Casañas in the bottom of the third in her first action in the circle since March 28 at Albany. The Stags would go on a six-run two out rally to build their lead to 11-1 heading into the fourth inning. After three runs in the stretch, head coach Breanne Gleason decided to go with senior Emily Sargent who came into the game facing a bases loaded situation.
Sargent gave up two singles and three runs before closing out the inning.
The Stags switched their pitcher to Madison Roberts in the top of the fourth inning. Central answered back with three-run stanza that was ignited by a single to right-center field from sophomore Giuliana Hathaway. Sophomore Sarah Ogilvie then reached on an error from the Fairfield third baseman.
Junior Kerri Dadalski then hit a RBI-single to score Hathaway. Camara then scored Ogilvie on a hard hit grounder to the shortstop who mishandled the ball. Paterson capped off the run with a sac fly to center field that easily scored Cronin from third, slicing the CCSU deficit to 11-4.
Fairfield kept the game out of reach with two additional runs in the bottom of the fourth inning while seeing its fourth Blue Devil thrower of the contest, sophomore Peyton Silverman.
Central Connecticut could not overcome the 8-run after 5-innings rule and finished the game with three hits and no errors.
